Makran Coast: Fishermen as the Silent Guardians
Along Pakistan’s Makran Coast—particularly in Balochistan—there is no active, well-equipped technical coastal monitoring institution. The responsibility of observing marine life, reporting environmental changes, and documenting illegal activities has largely fallen on the shoulders of the local fishing communities.
Fishermen from Gwadar, Ganz, and other coastal areas of Balochistan have emerged as the true, unpaid guardians of the sea. Working voluntarily and without any formal support, they collect critical data on marine biodiversity, endangered species, and illegal fishing practices. Using social media and direct communication, they regularly share this information with environmental and conservation organizations.

Despite their crucial role, the contributions of these fishermen are rarely acknowledged in media reports or official narratives. At the very least, their efforts deserve recognition in news coverage, as acknowledgment not only validates their work but also encourages others to participate in marine conservation and environmental protection.
Illegal Trawler Fishing: A Growing Threat
The daily invasion of illegal fishing trawlers along the Gwadar coastline is causing severe and irreversible damage to marine ecosystems. These trawlers use destructive fishing methods that wipe out juvenile fish, destroy breeding grounds, and devastate coral and seabed habitats. As a result, marine biodiversity is rapidly declining, and the livelihoods of small-scale local fishermen are being destroyed.
Local fishermen protest almost every day, raising their voices against this environmental and economic injustice. Unfortunately, their cries go unheard. There is little enforcement, no consistent monitoring, and minimal inclusion of local communities in decision-making processes.
An Urgent Call to Action
It is time to:
- Officially recognize local fishermen as frontline marine observers and protectors
- Take strict and enforceable action against illegal trawler fishing
- Establish scientific and technical coastal monitoring systems along the Makran Coast
- Include local fishing communities in policy-making and conservation efforts
If inaction continues, the consequences will be irreversible: the loss of marine life, the collapse of local livelihoods, and the destruction of a coastline that has sustained generations.
The fishermen of Balochistan are not just workers of the sea—they are its last line of defense.

پاکستان کے مکران ساحل، بالخصوص بلوچستان میں، آج تک کوئی مؤثر اور فعال تکنیکی ساحلی مشاہداتی ادارہ موجود نہیں۔ سمندری حیات، نایاب آبی جانداروں، اور غیر قانونی سرگرمیوں پر نظر رکھنے کا جو خلا ریاستی اداروں نے چھوڑ رکھا ہے، اسے حیرت انگیز طور پر مقامی ماہی گیر برادری پُر کر رہی ہے۔
بدقسمتی سے، میڈیا رپورٹس اور سرکاری بیانات میں ان ماہی گیروں کی خدمات کا ذکر شاذ و نادر ہی ہوتا ہے۔ حالانکہ کم از کم خبری رپورٹوں میں ان کی کوششوں کو سراہا اور تسلیم کیا جانا چاہیے۔ اس سے نہ صرف ان کی حوصلہ افزائی ہوگی بلکہ دیگر لوگ بھی اس مثبت اور قومی خدمت میں شامل ہونے کی ترغیب پائیں گے۔
غیر قانونی فشنگ ٹالرز: ایک مسلسل حملہ
گوادر کے ساحل پر آئے روز غیر قانونی فشنگ ٹالرز کی یلغار سمندری حیات کے لیے ایک سنگین خطرہ بن چکی ہے۔ یہ ٹالرز جدید جالوں کے ذریعے چھوٹی مچھلیوں، انڈوں اور مرجانوں تک کو تباہ کر دیتے ہیں، جس کا نتیجہ ماحولیاتی تباہی اور مقامی ماہی گیروں کے روزگار کی بربادی کی صورت میں نکلتا ہے۔
مقامی ماہی گیر روزانہ احتجاج کر رہے ہیں، آواز اٹھا رہے ہیں، لیکن افسوس کہ سننے والا کوئی نہیں۔ نہ مؤثر کارروائی، نہ مستقل نگرانی، اور نہ ہی ماہی گیروں کو فیصلہ سازی میں شامل کیا جاتا ہے۔
وقت کا تقاضا
اب وقت آ گیا ہے کہ:
- مقامی ماہی گیروں کو ساحلی محافظ کے طور پر تسلیم کیا جائے
- غیر قانونی فشنگ کے خلاف سخت اور عملی اقدامات کیے جائیں
- بلوچستان کے ساحل پر سائنسی و تکنیکی مشاہداتی نظام قائم کیا جائے
- اور سب سے بڑھ کر، ان لوگوں کی آواز سنی جائے جو روز سمندر کے ساتھ جیتے اور مرتے ہیں
اگر آج بھی خاموشی اختیار کی گئی تو کل ہمارے پاس نہ سمندر بچے گا، نہ مچھلی، اور نہ ہی وہ لوگ جو نسلوں سے اس ساحل کے امین ہیں ۔
