Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a large, sweet fruit known for its bright red (or sometimes yellow/orange) flesh, black seeds, and high-water content—about 90-92% water.
Origins:
Watermelons originated in Africa and have been cultivated for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians were eating them over 5,000 years ago!
Types of watermelon:
Seeded – the classic variety with black seeds
Seedless – bred to have very few or no mature seeds
Mini watermelons – small, personal-sized fruits
Yellow/orange-fleshed – sweeter, honey-like flavor
