Fried Green Chilies – A Fiery Side with a Tangy Twist
There’s something incredibly satisfying about pairing a simple meal like lentils and rice with a spicy, flavorful side. One such classic Pakistani side dish is Fried Green Chilies (Tali Hui Sabz Mirch) – a bold, tangy, and spicy treat that elevates any humble meal to something truly memorable.
A Traditional Flavor Explosion
These chilies are not just fried – they’re lovingly filled with a unique spiced yogurt mixture made from fenugreek seeds, mustard, and tangy mango powder (amchur). When fried, the chilies soften just enough to absorb all the flavors while still holding their bite. The result? A sizzling side dish packed with aroma, heat, and just the right hint of sourness.
Ingredients:
- Thick green chilies – 250g (around ½ lb)
- Yogurt – 1 cup (or ¾ cup if you want it thicker)
- Fenugreek seeds – ½ teaspoon
- Mustard seeds – a pinch (coarsely ground)
- Turmeric – 2 pinches
- Salt – to taste
- Mango powder (amchur) – 2 teaspoons
- Oil – for shallow frying
Instructions:
1. Wash and dry the chilies. Do not remove the stems — they help keep the chilies intact while stuffing.
2. Using a sharp knife, make a lengthwise slit on one side of each chili.
3. Dry roast the fenugreek seeds on a hot pan until fragrant.
4. Lightly sauté the turmeric in a few drops of oil to release its aroma.
5. Coarsely crush the mustard seeds.
6. Mix the roasted fenugreek, sautéed turmeric, crushed mustard, salt, and mango powder into the yogurt to create a thick, tangy paste.
7. Carefully stuff this paste into each chili using a small knife or spoon.
8. Let the stuffed chilies rest uncovered for about 2 hours so they dry slightly.
9. Heat a flat pan with a little oil and shallow-fry the chilies on low heat until golden and slightly crisp.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve these fried green chilies alongside boiled rice and lentils (dal), khichdi, or even with plain paratha. They bring a fiery kick and a burst of traditional flavor to any meal. The combination of heat and tanginess makes them truly irresistible.
