Crispy Fried Shrimp with a Spicy Kick: The Ultimate Snack or Appetizer

If you're a fan of crispy, golden seafood with a bit of heat, you're going to love this Crispy Fried Shrimp recipe. Whether you're hosting a gathering, planning a game night, or just craving something indulgent, these shrimp are a crowd-pleaser. Perfectly seasoned, coated in a light batter, and fried until golden brown — this dish brings restaurant-style crunch to your home kitchen.

Let’s dive into how you can make this at home!

Ingredients

For the Shrimp:

  • 500g (1 lb) large shrimp, peeled and deveined

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp paprika or chili powder (adjust to your heat preference)

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 cup cold water

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • Oil for deep frying

For the Spicy Finish (optional but recommended):

  • 1 tbsp paprika or chili powder

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp sugar (balances the heat)

  • A drizzle of hot sauce or chili oil (optional, for that final pop)

Instructions

1. Season the Shrimp

Start by patting your shrimp dry with a paper towel. Season them with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika/chili powder. Let them marinate for 10–15 minutes while you prep the batter.

2. Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, whisk together one egg and cold water. Add flour, cornstarch, and baking powder. Stir until just combined. The batter should be slightly runny but thick enough to coat the shrimp evenly.

3. Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or pot, heat oil to 175°C (350°F). Test with a small bit of batter — it should bubble and float instantly.

4. Fry the Shrimp

Dip each shrimp into the batter and carefully place it into the hot oil. Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook until golden brown and crispy (about 2–3 minutes per side). Drain on a wire rack or paper towels.

5. Add the Spicy Kick

While still hot, dust the shrimp with your spicy seasoning blend. For extra flavor, drizzle with a bit of hot sauce or chili oil.

Pro Tips

  • Cold water batter helps create a light, crispy texture.

  • Do not overcrowd the pan; it drops the oil temperature and results in soggy shrimp.

  • Tail-on shrimp can make for easier dipping and a prettier presentation.

  • Want it extra spicy? Add cayenne pepper to the batter or mix chili flakes into the seasoning.

Serve & Enjoy

Serve your crispy fried shrimp with a tangy dipping sauce — like spicy mayo, garlic aioli, or sweet chili — and watch them disappear fast!
